Research in the Field of Medicine

Shiseido has stepped into the field of medicine as one of the measures for achieving consumers’ beauty and health. Since this field involves risks by necessity, our first priority is reliable safety above all. We have been establishing healthy partnership with doctors and researchers who are willing to cooperate with us, and at the same time conducting researches again and again while paying maximum attention to safety.

Hair Regenerative Medicine

Shiseido has been collaborating with two University Hospitals on a clinical study on the establishment of “hair regenerative medicine technology” in Japan. This technology is the world’s leading hair regeneration/patented technology. After culturing the dermal sheath cup cells (which are considered to be the source of hair dermal papilla cells that play an important role in the growth of hair) isolated from the patient concerned about pattern baldness and thinning hair, they are implanted (injected) into the balding scalp skin to rejuvenate the damaged hair follicles as well as promote the growth of healthy hair.
Regenerative medicine refers to the treatment method, in which tissues/cells of human origin are implanted into the patients who cannot be treated by existing treatment methods, and curing by self-renewing capability is expected. There are two types of implantations: “autologous cell implantation” in which the cells of the relevant patient are utilized and “allogeneic cell implantation” in which the cells of other people are utilized. The technology Shiseido is working on is the autologous cell implantation technology, which is considered to have fewer side effects of immune rejection, etc. and higher safety level than allogeneic cell implantation.
With regard to the pattern baldness and thinning hair, presently hair growth/regrowth agent for external application and oral treatment agent with androgen suppression effect are put into practice. However, there are some issues including the facts that limited topical dosage exists for females and oral treatment agents are not applicable to female patients. The introduction of this technology is expected to have less physical burden due to surgical procedures, reduce rejection reaction risks after cell implantation, and be applicable to all patients regardless of gender. Therefore, the concerned persons look forward to the technology being widely utilized as soon as possible.

Application of D -Amino Acids Analysis Technique into the Field of Medicine

Shiseido elucidated for the first time that one of the intractable diseases “Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)”, which is a neurodegenerative disease due to selective motoneuronal death, has the mechanisms that causes imbalance in D-serine in the spinal cord, jointly with Department of Anatomy, Keio University School of Medicine, and Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Kyushu University. This study significantly advanced since we discovered the change in D-serine in the central nervous tissues by the 2-dimensional high performance liquid chromatography (2D-HPLC)-based chiral amino acid metabolomics that was developed by Shiseido and Kyushu University.Based on this technique, we are developing medical solutions, such as early diagnosis methods, for not only neurological disease but also cardiovascular disease and metabolic disease.

Cosmetic Medicine Research

From chemical peeling to improvement of natural healing power, Shiseido’s cosmetic researches are increasingly utilized in the field of cosmetic medicine.

Cosmetic medicine refers to medical practice by doctors to provide patients with healthy and beautiful bare skin and appearance using pharmaceuticals and medical devices. Cosmetic medicine is generally separated into two types of treatment made up of “cosmetic surgery” that requires surgical operation and “cosmetic dermatology” that is not accompanied by surgical operation. Shiseido entered the field of “cosmetic dermatology” which is unaccompanied by surgical operation in 2005. Since then, we have been proactively promoting the provision of reliable products backed up by our research and development capability cultivated over many long years as well as research on the mechanisms of the effects of cosmetic treatment.

Chemical peeling with glycolic acid

Dermatological research has shown that superficial peeling using glycolic acid (GA) has almost no influence on the thickness of the stratum corneum, and GA peeling activates skin proliferation and accelerates the turnover of skin (skin’s regenerative power is enhanced).

Glycolic acid

W-PRP, platelet rich plasma stimulates the healing process of tissues in aesthetic medicine

W-PRP is a new method of treatment in aesthetic medicine, which stimulates self-healing process of tissues by re-injecting high concentrations of blood platelets and white blood cells refined from one’s own blood into one’s own body.
After examination of this method in joint research with doctors, we confirmed the improvement effect on wrinkles and resilience as well as the generation of collagen within the skin.

Electrical energy enhances drug delivery across the skin (Iontohoresis)

Iontophorsis is one of the techniques to enhance drug delivery across the skin by electrical energy.
Using this technique, Shiseido’s original active ingredients can be delivered into the skin effectively, resulting in higher efficacy.

Glycylglycine is an original active ingredient for contracting pores. We established the most suitable condition for delivering Glycylglycine into the skin and developed a formulation based on the research achievements. In addition, under the supervision of Dr. Hattori from Minami Aoyama Dermatology Skincare Clinic(opens in new window.) , we conducted the clinical study to volunteers and we showed that Glycylglycine iontophoresis treatment has high efficacy for contracting pores.
