Shiseido's R&D adopts a multi-hub network that maximizes regional strengths, as well as globally promotes joint researches with external partners.
In the past, we promoted the “hub-and-spoke model,” in which our centers in Japan led basic research and shared the outcomes with our centers around the world. However, from 2019, we are promoting a “multi-hub network,” allowing our 8 centers around the world to pursue research by taking advantage of and maximizing their regional strengths to meet local consumer needs, and develop outcomes globally.

The concept of the Global Innovation Center “S/PARK” is “the integration of diverse people and knowledge.” Shiseido accelerates collaboration with not only people and expertise inside the company but also external partners from advanced research institutes, in different research areas and industry sectors, as well as consumers to realize innovation. The GIC was relocated to Minato Mirai 21 in Yokohama, Japan in April 2019, being transformed into a new kind of facility with various spaces dedicated to collaborative works.
Through various joint research with partners in different research areas and industry sectors, we will achieve the integration of external knowledge and technologies in a speedy manner.
With the representation of an apartment room, we will analyze beauty activities and needs from various perspectives.
We promote the creation of new products and services by integrating our expertise with external partners’ technologies through joint research, business alliances and M&A activities. Here are our main activities:
Joint research with MGH/Harvard CBRC*
The CBRC has successfully made numerous research achievements in the fields of skin and hair science, leading to the discovery of innovative theories in dermatology and creation of new ingredients.
*MGH/Harvard CBRC (Cutaneous Biology Research Center) was founded with Shiseido’s support as a comprehensive research center for conducting advanced research on dermatology in 1989 by Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School.LEARN MORE
