Shiseido’s chief research and development officer, Mr. Shimatani, recognized in his greeting at the grand award ceremony that Japan needs to further increase the number of female researchers. He also mentioned that the grant brings together high-level research themes every year, and nearly half of the past recipients were promoted after receiving this grant. Mr. Shimatani said, “Slowly but surely, the grant’s purpose of supporting female researchers who are aiming to be leaders is being achieved.”
Ms. Natsumi Ageta-Ishihara, a lecturer at Nagoya University, delivered her speech as a representative of the 10th Grant recipients: “It is a great pleasure for me to earn the award. The reason why I continued to apply for the grant was I agreed with the aim of the grant, which is to support women who aim to hold a leadership position.” She continued, “It has always been my goal to become a leading researcher. I thought the grant was a stepping stone to promotion.” Ms. Ageta-Ishihara shared her enthusiasm in continuing her research with the help of the grant: “I would like to utilize the grant and set an example for students by taking my research to a new level.”
The 2016’s grant recipient, Ms. Tomoko Kamasaki, a project assistant professor at Hokkaido University, sent cheers to this year’s recipients: “I used the grant to hire technical support staff and created a research group to continue my research activities today. As a researcher, I am moving up step by step. I am strongly aware of what this grant can do. Researchers can utilize the grant for various purposes to fit their needs such as raising children and improving work conditions. Let’s do our best to continue our research activities!”

Supporting Female Researchers Who Will Play a Leading Role in the Future

In order to extend support to the largest possible pool of applicants, Shiseido does not set age limits and has expanded research areas to encompass all natural science research. Shiseido allows these funds to be used to hire babysitters while on business trip, or research assistants, etc. to support female researchers to continue their research free of concerns about their particular life stage.
Moving forward, Shiseido will continuously contribute to nurturing female researchers who are aiming to be leaders through the Shiseido Female Researcher Science Grant by creating ideal work environment for female researchers.
